It's time we fixed up the schools

The 1930s plumbing is starting to clog. Electrical outlets in some classrooms do quadruple duty. Science lab space at the high school cannot keep up with demand. And our elementary school cafeterias - designed for a time when most kids went home for lunch - are noisy, overcrowded and have to be converted twice each day into art rooms.

Spen
d money now?
Yes. Good facilities are important to keep our district competitive with other area schools. Parents have choices. The district has done well maintaining its buildings with restricted operating resources. After seven decades of hard use, our buildings still have a lot of life left in them. But they are deteriorating.

And now that debt from the middle school conversion is being retired, deferred maintenance can be done next year with no increase in property taxes. When the work is finished, our facilities will be good for another 50 years or more. It just makes sense to act before other problems get out of hand. Additions are also needed on three schools to reduce crowding and enhance educational opportunity. By acting now, the district could take advantage of low interest rates on new borrowing and lock in bids on construction at reduced costs.
But it requires a yes vote on both questions in the referendum.

A great deal of research and discussion have gone into plans that the School Board unanimously agreed to put before voters on
Nov. 3. Each proposal fits into a carefully crafted master plan. At this Web site, you can acquaint yourself with information about the improvements, about referendum voting and about taxes.

You can join the effort and help make these plans a reality!
